So what is a mattress topper?

What is a mattress topper?

Often customers tell us they have never heard of this before, and did not even know a product like this existed.  It is sometimes also called an overlay.

Let’s take a look at this product and why it can be a great addition to your bed.

What is a mattress topper?

Essentially this is a layer of foam that sits on the surface of your bed.  The fitted sheet holds it snugly in place so that it does not move. The topper adds an extra layer of comfort and softness to your bed.

Why have one?

A topper is a great addition to your bed for a few reasons:

  • it can soften your mattress if you find your bed too firm
  • the topper distributes your weight across the mattress for improved support
  • you can extend the life of your mattress
  • it can turn a medium firm bed into a plush one

We have a few options to choose from:

  • Convoluted Blue Gel Overlay

This is manufactured by Cloud Nine.  It is made from uncovered memory foam. It responds to the warmth of your body and moulds to your curves.  The foam is called Blue Gel Visco Breath Blue Gel and it has heat dissipating qualities.

  • Memory Foam Topper

This topper is 5mm of memory foam with a bamboo towelling cover for a soft surface. It gives the bed a plush comfort.

  • Latex Foam Topper

The Latex Foam topper looks exactly like the Memory Foam one but it has latex.  Latex bounces back to its shape very quickly so you don’t get that “sinking in” feeling you get from memory foam.  This makes it an easy surface to turn on, and it gives good pressure relief.  It is firmer  than memory foam and gives the bed a medium firm comfort.

When to use a mattress topper?

The primary reason for having an overlay or topper, is to soften your bed.  The topper does not compromise the support the bed gives, but it provides a little more give on the surface of the bed.

Cloud Nine beds are firmer than most other brands. Their Chiroflex and Lodestar are particularly firm.  Cloud Nine recommends that you use a topper to give a little softness if you find them too firm.

Beds generally have a life span of 7 to 10 years.  The foam that makes up the sleeping surface comfort layers starts to deteriorate after some time.  With an overlay you can extend the life of the mattress, and you can even replace the topper after a few years.

When is a topper not the answer?

It is important that the mattress you are using is providing good support.  It needs to have a robust core – whether that is bonnel spring, pocket springs, or foam. The core of the bed is what provides supports and ensures proper alignment of your sleeping body.

If your bed is lumpy or sags the problem cannot be fixed with a topper.  Then it is time for a new bed.

Available Sizes

All of the toppers at Bedworld are available in single, 3/4, double, queen and king, in both standard length and extra length.  The Memory Foam and Latex Foam ones are also available in Super King (200cm x 200cm).  These can also be custom made to any size that you need.
