Bunk Beds: Space, Safety and Choosing Well

Bunk beds for shared and small children bedrooms

Two children, one small room — bunk beds solve a problem that no amount of clever furniture arrangement otherwise fixes. They also come with a short list of safety rules that are genuinely worth knowing before you buy rather than after.

The floor space argument

A bunk gives back roughly the footprint of an entire single bed. In a typical shared children’s room that is the difference between a walkway and a play area. It is the same instinct behind storage bases — using the vertical space that is already paid for.

Bunk beds: the safety rules that matter

  • No child under six on the top bunk — this is the standard guidance and it is worth following.
  • Guard rails on both sides of the top bunk, even against a wall.
  • The ladder must be fixed, not hooked on.
  • Nothing hangs from the frame — skipping ropes, bags and cords are a strangulation risk.
  • Check the bolts every few months; bunks work loose with use in a way single beds do not.

Mattress depth is a safety spec, not a comfort one

This is the one people miss. The top bunk guard rail has to stand a safe height above the sleeping surface, so a mattress that is too thick lowers that margin and defeats the rail. Manufacturers state a maximum depth for the top bunk — stay under it, even if a deeper mattress looks more comfortable.

Choosing the mattresses

Bunks take single or three quarter mattresses depending on the model — check which, and see our bed sizes guide for dimensions. A bonnell spring is usually the sensible choice for a child’s bed: supportive, hard-wearing and good value. Add a waterproof mattress protector — in a child’s room that is not optional, as we explain in why every bed needs one.

Children outgrow bunks, so think about what comes next. Our note on upgrading to a new bed set covers the timing.
