Buying online is easy until you get to the size. South African bed sizes have their own names and their own quirks, and the difference between a queen and a queen XL is the difference between comfortable feet and feet that hang off the end. Here is the full range, in plain terms.

What XL actually means

XL is about length, not width. A standard bed is 188cm long; an XL is 200cm. If anyone sleeping in the bed is over about 1.8m tall, XL is worth the small extra cost — it is the single upgrade people are most glad they made. The width stays exactly the same, so an XL queen still fits a queen-width space.

King, super king and the two-base question

A king is wider than a queen by about 30cm, which is a genuinely different sleeping experience for two people. It is a good thing: two halves go up a staircase and around a corner that one piece never would.

Measure the room, not just the bed

• Leave at least 60cm on each side you need to walk down.
• Check the door, passage and stair turn — this is where deliveries fail, not the bedroom.
• Allow for the headboard depth if you are adding one from our headboard range.
• Remember the base adds height; a topper or thick mattress adds more.
