Types of Couches Explained: Find the Right Style for Your Lounge

Types of couches explained by Bedworld

A couch is the piece of furniture you use most after your bed, so it pays to understand the types of couches before you choose one. The style decides how many people it seats, how much floor space it takes, and whether it suits the way your household actually uses the lounge.

Here are the main styles in our couch range, and who each one suits.

The main types of couches

Corner couches

A corner couch, also called an L-shaped couch or sectional, fits into the corner of a room and seats more people in less floor space than two separate couches. Our Corner Small L measures about 2.2 metres with a 1.9 metre extension, for compact lounges. The Corner Large L measures about 2.5 metres with a 2 metre extension, for open-plan rooms and big families.

Chesterfield

The Chesterfield Classic is instantly recognisable by its rolled arms, deep button tufting and low, upright back. It suits formal lounges, studies and anyone who likes a classic look. It comes in leather-look finishes: Black or Brown Air Leather, Brown Buffalo and Dark Brown Buffalo.

Chaise and daybed

A chaise is made for stretching out rather than sitting upright. The Scroll Chaise Daybed has a classic scroll arm and comes in five velvet colours. It works as a reading corner in a bedroom, or as an extra seat in a lounge.

Modern and everyday couches

The Miami Modern has wide, deep seats, a low curved back and angled low arms, for a relaxed designer look. The Oxford has a more upright profile with deep seats, which suits people who prefer firm back support. The Lola Everyday keeps things simple, with clean lines that fit almost any room. The California Contemporary completes the range.

Choosing between types of couches

One, two or three seater?

The Miami, Chesterfield, Oxford and Lola come as a one seater, two seater, three seater or a three piece set. A three piece set is usually a three seater, a two seater and a one seater, which furnishes a whole lounge in one matching style. Choose the size on the product page.

Fabric, velvet or leather-look?

  • Fabric is soft, breathable and stays comfortable in summer.
  • Velvet has a rich, soft pile and deep colours, such as blue, green, grey and red.
  • Leather-look finishes such as Air Leather and Buffalo wipe clean easily, which helps with children and pets.

The colours available differ by couch, so check the options on each product page.

Measure before you choose

Measure the wall the couch will stand against, and leave enough space to walk past it and to a coffee table. Also measure the doorways and passages it must pass through on delivery day. Our guide to couches for your space has more layout ideas.
