How to clean a mattress

Knowing how to clean a mattress will help to keep yours fresh and hygienic. There are a few simple things to do to keep yours in tip top condition.

Prevention is better than cure

It is always easier to prevent a mattress from getting dirty or stained in the first place, than it is to clean it afterwards.  For this reason it is very important to have a mattress protector.

Modern mattress protectors have a waterproof layer bonded onto the fabric.  This makes the cover waterproof, but it’s not like the plastic sheeting you’ll find on a hospital bed.  The mattress protector provides a soft, comfortable sleeping surface and it doesn’t crinkle when you move.

This built in barrier will also prevent flakes of skin from accumulating on the mattress.  Dust mites are a major cause of allergies and these critters thrive on dead skin cells. Making sure your mattress remains clear of them is therefore important for your health.

A mattress protector can be removed and washed regularly, keeping your mattress clean.

The guarantee and warranty on a mattress is only valid if your bed is maintained in a hygienic condition and it is not stained.  This means that a mattress protector is a must. If you don’t have one yet, order one here.

If your mattress does get a stain, you can still clean it.

How to clean a mattress

There are a few simple steps to follow to clean your mattress.

Step 1 : Vacuum

The first thing to do is vacuum your mattress.  Most vacuum cleaners come with an upholstery attachment. This makes it easy to use and ensures that you do not damage the fabric.  Make sure you vacuum the whole surface of the mattress as well as the sides.

Step 2 : Deodarise

To keep your bed smelling fresh and hygienic, an easy tip is to sprinkle the surface of the mattress with Bicarbonate of Soda (also known as Baking Soda).  This will absorb any odours such as stale sweat or pet smells (if your pet sleeps on your bed).  Leave the Bicarb for about 10 minutes and give the mattress another thorough vacuum.

Step 3 : Stains

It is possible to remove stains with a homemade mixture of hydrogen peroxide, dishwashing liquid and bicarbonate of soda.  You can also add a drop of lavendar oil to the mix, if you like. Place the mixture in a spray bottle and cover the stain.  Leave for about an hour till dry, and then vacuum thoroughly.

This mixture works well to remove marks from urine, as well as the smell.  It is particularly helpful if you have small children.  Exposing the mattress to sunlight and fresh air will also help clear the stain and any odour.

Other things to do to keep a mattress clean

There are a few others things you can do to keep your bed fresh and clean.

Some would argue you shouldn’t make your bed at all but rather leave the covers off to allow the mattress to get fresh air.  Your bed will benefit from being left uncovered occasionaly (but you may not convince your partner that you should not make the bed at all).

Another option is to call in the professional cleaners. If you know how to clean your mattress but think it needs a deep clean, this could be for you.

It is worth saying again that a mattress protector is a must.  This will keep your bed clean and fresh, and it can be washed as often as you like.  A mattress protector will also make sure your warranty and guarantee remain valid.
