If your bed is structurally fine but simply too firm, you do not need a new mattress. A mattress topper is a removable comfort layer that sits on top of the mattress and changes how it feels for a fraction of the cost of replacing it.
When a mattress topper is the right answer
The mattress is supportive but harder than you expected.
You have become a side sleeper and want more give at the shoulder and hip.
A guest room bed needs to be more welcoming without a new purchase.
You want to soften a bed bought firm for a heavier partner.
When it is not
A topper adds comfort. It cannot add support. If the mattress has a visible dip, if you can feel individual springs, or if you wake with back pain that eases during the day, the problem is underneath and a topper will only disguise it for a few months. That is a replacement, and choosing the right weight rating the second time round is what stops it happening again.
Deciding between a mattress topper and a new mattress
Getting the fit right
Buy the topper in the same size as the mattress and check the depth of your fitted sheets — a thick topper plus a deep mattress can outgrow standard sheets. If you are unsure of your size, our bed sizes guide lists every size we stock with dimensions.
Layer it correctly
The order matters: mattress, then topper, then protector, then sheet. Putting the protector under the topper leaves the topper exposed to spills and defeats the point — as covered in why every bed needs a protector.
