Good mattress care is unglamorous and genuinely adds years to a bed. It is also how you keep a warranty that most people accidentally void within the first month without ever knowing.
Mattress care starts with rotating it
Rotate the mattress head to foot every three months. Set a reminder, because nobody remembers otherwise.
The reason is straightforward: you sleep in the same place every night, and the materials under that spot compress faster than everywhere else. Rotating spreads the wear, and a mattress that has been rotated from new will stay level years longer than one that has not.
Do not flip it unless it is a double-sided mattress. Most modern mattresses have a comfort layer on one side only, and turning one of those over means sleeping on the unfinished side.
Support it properly
This is the big one. A mattress is designed to work on a suitable base, and a sagging base drags the mattress down with it — the damage shows in the mattress, and the warranty claim gets declined because the cause was the support underneath.
If your base is old or dips in the middle, replace it with the mattress. Bed set or mattress only covers how to judge that, and bed frames vs bases explains what each does.
The stain rule
Worth stating plainly because it surprises people: a single stain is usually enough for a manufacturer to refuse a warranty claim outright, regardless of whether the stain has anything to do with the fault.
Vacuum the surface with an upholstery attachment every few months. For a spill, blot — do not rub, do not soak. A damp cloth with a little mild detergent, then let it dry completely before making the bed, because trapped moisture is how a mattress develops a smell it never loses.
Strip the bed and let the mattress air for an hour or two when you change the linen. It costs nothing.
Moving it without ruining it
Carry a mattress flat or on its side, never bent. Folding one to get it round a corner can break the spring unit or crease the foam permanently, and that damage is not covered by anything.
When care is no longer the answer
At some point a mattress is simply finished, and no amount of rotating fixes a broken spring unit or a permanent body impression. If you are waking up stiff, or you sleep better away from home, that is the signal — replacing your mattress covers what to look for.
A topper can buy a year or two on a mattress that is merely a bit firm for you, but it will not rescue one that has collapsed. Browse mattresses or ask us.
