Guest Room Beds: Comfortable Without Overspending

Well-made guest room bed with a neutral headboard and fresh linen

A guest room bed has an awkward job. It is slept in perhaps forty nights a year, so spending main-bedroom money on it feels absurd — but every single one of those nights it is being quietly judged by somebody you like.

The trick is knowing where it is safe to save and where it really is not.

Where to save on a guest room bed

The brand. Our Value Buys range at 88 options is a genuine mattress at a modest price. In a spare room it does the job well.

The base. A plain base under a decent mattress is invisible once the bed is made. Add a headboard if you want the room to look finished — it is the cheapest thing that makes a spare room look deliberate, and choosing style and height covers it.

The size. A 3/4 sleeps one adult comfortably and leaves the room usable for something else — see the in-between size.

Where not to save

The comfort rating. A guest bed that is too firm or too soft is the single most common reason people sleep badly somewhere else. Medium firm — our most-stocked rating with 519 options — suits the widest range of visitors, which is exactly what you need when you do not know who is coming.

The protector. A mattress protector on a guest bed is not optional. It is used by different people, occasionally by children, and a stain voids the warranty.

The pillows. Cheap pillows ruin otherwise good beds. Keep two firmness options in the cupboard so guests can choose — choosing a pillow explains why it matters so much.

A simple formula for specifying a comfortable guest room bed

The option most people never consider

Our Hospitality range — 175 options — is specified for hotels and guesthouses. That means it is built for beds slept in by a different person every night, with heavier use and a longer service life than a domestic mattress is designed for.

For a guest room that is exactly the right specification, and it is usually keener on price than a domestic equivalent because it is built for volume. If you run a guesthouse or a rental rather than a spare room, bulk hotel beds is the place to start.

If the room has to do two jobs

Most spare rooms are also an office, a gym or a store room. A storage base gets linen and everything else off the floor, and a sleeper couch turns the room into a guest room only when you need one.

Finishing it properly

The last 5% costs very little and is what guests actually remember: fresh linen that fits, a working bedside light, and somewhere to put a suitcase. Browse bed sets, accessories, or tell us the room size and we will suggest a combination.
