Choosing a bed for couples is rarely about finding the best mattress. It is about finding the one both people can live with — and that is a different problem, because the two of you probably differ in weight, in sleeping position, and in what “comfortable” means.
Three things solve most of it: size, spring type, and being honest about firmness.
A bed for couples starts with size
A queen gives each person roughly the width of a single bed. That sounds generous until somebody sleeps on their side with a knee out, and it is why so many couples who “sleep badly together” simply sleep in a bed that is too small.
A king is about 30cm wider than a queen, which is the single most effective upgrade available to a couple. If the room takes it, take it — 118 king and 94 King XL options are listed.
If one of you moves all night
This is what pocket springs are for. In a pocket spring mattress each coil sits in its own fabric pocket and compresses independently, so movement on one side transfers far less to the other. We list 206 pocket spring options.
A bonnell spring unit, where the coils are wired together, moves as one — better value, but every turn travels. Foam sits in between and dampens movement well. If a restless partner is the main complaint, pocket spring is the answer.
If you disagree on firmness
Firmness preference is mostly a function of weight and sleeping position, not personality, which is why it is so hard to argue about. A heavier person needs more support to stay level; a side sleeper wants more give at the shoulder and hip.
The workable compromise is usually medium firm — our most-stocked rating at 519 options, precisely because it suits the widest range of people. Then adjust one side with a mattress topper, which softens without changing the mattress underneath. How toppers work covers it.
When the gap is too wide to bridge
If one of you needs plush and the other extra firm, a single mattress will disappoint somebody every night. The proper solution is two mattresses on one base — a split king setup — where each side is specified independently and the bed still looks like one bed.
Do not skip the weight rating
Every mattress has a supported weight per sleeper, and it applies per side rather than as a couple’s total. If there is a significant weight difference between you, check that both of you fall within the rating — why it matters explains what happens when somebody is over it.
