Bed Set or Mattress Only: Which Should You Buy?

The thing most people get wrong is assuming the base is fine because it looks fine.
Bed set or mattress only: when the mattress alone is right
If your base is under about eight years old, has never been slept on directly, and still sits dead level, buying a mattress on its own is sensible. You save a meaningful amount and you throw away nothing that still works.
Check it properly first. Take the mattress off, look along the top of the base from the side, and press down across the middle. It should be flat and it should not give.
When a bed set is the better decision
A tired base ruins a new mattress, and it does it quickly. The base carries the load; if it sags, the mattress sags with it, and you will feel the dip inside a year on a mattress that is otherwise barely used.
Worse, it usually voids the warranty. Manufacturers are entitled to refuse a claim on a mattress that has been used on unsuitable or worn support, which means a saved base can cost you the whole mattress.
The price argument is closer than it looks
A set costs more than a mattress, but not by as much as most people expect, because the base is the cheaper half. Weigh that against replacing the mattress early because the base finished it off, and the set is often the cheaper route over the life of the bed.

What kind of base, if you are replacing it

Match the mattress to the sleeper, not the base
Whichever route you take, the mattress is the part that decides how you sleep.
