Find the right bed for you for your best night’s sleep.
You spend a third of your life on your bed. Let that sink in for a moment.
A bed is an investment and should last you for many years. There are a few things you should know and consider before you make your choice. This will help you find the right bed for you, one you are happy to live with (and sleep on).
Here are the top six things you should decide before you buy:
1. Find the right bed for your weight.
If you are a heavier person, do not buy a mattress that cannot handle your weight. The mattress will not offer you the correct support and it will not last. The manufacturers will also cancel the guarantee. If the mattress does not show the maximum weight per person on the label, ask the sales consultant!
2. What is the Guarantee and Warranty on the bed?
The Guarantee is a promise by the manufacturer, to handle a factory complaint, at their cost. The warranty is where you share the cost of repairing or replacing the mattress pro rata with the manufacturer. A guarantee is more important than a warranty. Do not be fooled! A big warranty does not mean a better quality bed.
3. Do you want soft, medium or firm comfort?
The cushioning on the mattress makes the difference in comfort. Make sure you feel supported by the mattress. A too-soft mattress may not hold you up properly and may not last as long. A too-hard mattress may be uncomfortable and leave you feeling bruised. Test a mattress by lying on your back and both sides, and choose the mattress you can imagine spending 8 hours on.
It is a myth that a hard mattress is better for your back. Hotels choose medium-firm mattresses for their beds as they know these are most comfortable for the majority of people. To learn more about this, read our post “True or False? A hard mattress is better for your back“.
4. Should you buy a base set or mattress only?
It is always advisable to buy a set rather than just the mattress as you know they are both new and will work together. However, if you have bedroom furniture or an existing base, you can buy just the mattress. Make sure the slats or board on the furniture base are still firm and straight. Make sure the slats are not wider than 8cm apart. If in doubt, rather get a new base as a damaged base could compromise the life of the mattress.
5. Should you get a mattress protector?
Yes! One of the biggest contributors to the breakdown and softening of cushioning is moisture. Mattress protectors will prevent perspiration ruining the mattress, and will keep your mattress hygienic and clean. One of the conditions of your guarantee, as stipulated by manufacturers, is that the mattress is maintained in a hygienic state. A mattress protector is essential. For more information on this, read our post on why you need a mattress protector.
6. What size bed should you get?
You need space to be able to roll over and to stretch out. Try get the biggest possible bed that your room can accommodate. If you share the bed with a partner, you need enough space for both of you to sleep without disturbing each other. If you have the room, a king size mattress is really king!
