Separate beds for snoring partners?

Separate beds for snoring partners may be your best bet for a good night’s sleep.

The sound of snoring

It starts in the middle of the night, when the world is quiet and all is peaceful.

Sometimes it starts softly, slowly building to a crashing crescendo.  Other times it begins suddenly at full throttle.  There could be a whistling, or a grunting, or a buzzing.  Then there is the snort followed by the holding, holding, holding of breath, till finally a new deep breath, and the cycle starts over.

If your partner snores this will be familiar to you.  You are now awake, listening to this jarring tune, unable to sleep further whilst your partner sleeps on, blissfully unaware.

What causes the snoring?

There could be a number of causes for snoring. The common ones include being overweight, nasal congestion, smoking, alcohol use, or even sleep apnea (which is a serious condition).

Snoring can affect the quality of sleep and lead to other health problems.  This is why it is important to establish the cause of the problem, and find a solution.  If self diagnoses and over-the-counter treatment isn’t working, it is time to see a GP.

But what if it isn’t you snoring?!

This problem draws a lot of attention for the snorer, but what happens if you are the one being tortured by this night time cacophony? What can you do?

Here are some tips to try:

  • encourage your partner to use an aid and/or see a GP
  • nudge them so they turn on their side
  • buy yourself some ear plugs
  • move into your own room

Separate beds for snoring partners

It may seem extreme to change beds for snoring partners but a separate room is a good option if you have the space.  Your own sleep is important for your well being.  It is not that unusual for couples to sleep apart – studies show as many as 1 in 4 sleep in separate beds or even rooms.

How can Bedworld help?

We can’t help stop the snoring but we can help you with a new bed of your own. A Cloud Nine bed is a good choice for example because it is non allergenic.

A possible solution is to get two single beds – you can sleep in separate rooms until he or she has resolved their snoring problem. A mattress topper or converter can be used at a later stage to join the two beds into a king size bed.
